Chilli (Capsicum annuum) is one of the most important spice crops in India and across the world. Known for its pungency, flavor, and rich color, chilli holds a special place in Indian cuisine as well as in the global spice market. India is the largest producer, consumer, and exporter of chillies, contributing significantly to global demand.

Chilli is cultivated both for fresh green use and for dry red production, which goes into cooking, spice powders, pickles, and various value-added products. Beyond culinary uses, chillies are valued for their oleoresin and capsaicin content, making them vital for the food processing and pharmaceutical industries.

Chilli farming can be highly profitable when the right seeds, proper agronomic practices, and effective plant protection measures are followed. There are many types of chilli varieties available. Before starting chilli farming, it is important to decide which variety to sow. A chilli variety can be selected based on factors such as climate suitability, soil type, market demand, export potential, farming purpose, and more.

A few popular chilli types are mentioned below.

Types of Chilli Seeds

The first and most crucial step to achieving a healthy crop and good yield is sowing high-quality chilli seeds. To select the best seeds, it is important to have awareness about the different types of seeds available. Broadly, chilli seeds can be classified into the following types:

F1 Hybrid Chilli Seeds
These are hybrid seeds developed by cross-breeding two superior parent plants. Generally, hybrid chilli seeds offer high yield, uniform growth, and consistent fruit quality. They are suitable for commercial farmers aiming for maximum production.

Open-Pollinated (OP) Chilli Seeds
These seeds are naturally pollinated and can be saved and replanted for subsequent seasons. They are cost-effective and suitable for small-scale farmers and home gardeners.

Chilli Seeds in Farming

Chilli seeds are generally small, flat, round, and light yellow to pale brown in color, with a smooth texture. They are obtained from the dried fruits (pods) of the chilli plant. On average, chilli seeds germinate within 7–14 days under suitable conditions.

Chilli seeds are typically sown in nurseries or seedbeds and later transplanted to the main field. For open-pollinated (OP) varieties, approximately 250 g of seeds per acre are required for transplanted crops, while 400 g per acre is needed for direct sowing. For hybrid varieties, the seed requirement is lower, around 80–100 g per acre. Quality seeds and proper sowing practices play a crucial role in achieving healthy plants and better yields.

Importance of Choosing Quality Chilli Seeds

Seeds are the most critical input in farming, as the entire crop performance depends on them. In chilli cultivation, choosing the right quality seeds makes a significant difference in terms of crop growth, yield, and profitability. Chilli is a long-duration crop that requires proper care from the very beginning, and it all starts with sowing healthy, vigorous seeds. High-quality chilli seeds ensure strong germination, healthy plants, and uniform crop development. For farmers, investing in quality seeds is not just an expense but the first step toward successful farming. Without quality seeds, even the best practices in irrigation, fertilization, or crop protection may not yield the desired results

Chilli Seed Sowing Guide

Before sowing, it is important to check whether the chilli seeds have been pre-treated with chemicals. Chilli seeds are usually treated to protect against soil-borne diseases and pests, ensuring better germination and healthier seedlings.

Generally, hybrid chilli seeds sold by private companies are already treated with chemicals before sale. If the seeds are not pre-treated, it is recommended to apply appropriate seed treatments such as Trichoderma viride, Pseudomonas fluorescens, or Captan, following expert guidance.

Once the seeds are ready, they can be sown either directly in the field or in nursery beds/protrays for transplantation, depending on the cultivation method chosen.

Time for Sowing Chilli Seeds

For direct sowing, chilli seeds can be planted in the field during the Kharif season, typically between July and August. In the Rabi season, sowing can be carried out from September to October. For the transplanting method, chilli seeds can be sown in a nursery from July to August. The seedlings can then be carefully transplanted to the main field from August to September

Method of Sowing Chilli Seeds

Chilli seeds can either be sown directly in the field or first raised in a nursery bed and later transplanted to the main field. In commercial chilli (Mirchi) cultivation, the transplantation method is generally preferred, as it can help produce healthier and stronger plants.

Nursery Management

Proper nursery management can play a key role in producing quality chilli seedlings. There are two common ways to raise a nursery: raised nursery beds and protrays.

Raised Nursery Beds:
The selected area for the nursery can be ploughed to a fine tilth. Well-decomposed farmyard manure (FYM) at a rate of 20–25 kg per bed can be mixed thoroughly into the soil about a month before sowing. Seedbeds can be prepared with a width of 1 m, a height of 15 cm, and a convenient length. Chilli seeds can be sown in rows spaced 5 cm apart. A light layer of sand and well-decomposed compost can be sprinkled over the seeds to cover them. Paddy straw can be used for mulching and can be removed once germination begins. The nursery bed can be irrigated daily, while avoiding heavy watering. To protect seedlings from damping-off, the beds can be drenched with copper oxychloride (3 g/L) on the 9th and 15th days after sowing (DAS).

Protrays:
Protrays can be filled with sterilized coco peat, and one seed can be sown per cell, covered lightly with coco peat. Protrays can be kept under insect-proof nets to maintain healthy seedlings. A net measuring 5 m × 4.5 m × 2 m can hold 100–120 protrays (98 cells each), producing around 10,000–12,000 seedlings, which can be enough for planting one acre. The seedlings can be watered daily, and 18 days after sowing, they can be drenched with a 5 g/L solution of 19:19:19 fertilizer to promote healthy growth.

Transplantation of Chilli Seedlings

Chilli seedlings can be ready for transplantation 35 to 45 days after sowing. Short, thick-stemmed seedlings are usually preferred, as they can establish more easily in the main field. For older seedlings, topping can be done about one week before transplantation to encourage better growth.

Seedlings can be planted with a spacing of 30 to 45 cm between plants and 60 to 75 cm between rows. The exact spacing can vary depending on the chilli variety, local conditions, and the season.

After transplantation, the field can be irrigated immediately to help the seedlings settle and establish properly. Any gaps in the field can be filled with seedlings 15 to 20 days after transplantation to ensure uniform crop coverage.
